Born in Mexico City, Fernando Sepulveda Sagaseta was drawn to the University of Miami’s College of Engineering for its Innovation, Technology and Design (ITD) program. He was particularly excited by the program’s focus on real-world projects and independent learning, which helped nurture his entrepreneurial spirit.
Now, as Engineering Student Council president, the junior has taken on a leadership role focused on strengthening community, celebrating tradition, and empowering students to shape their experience through advocacy and involvement.
"Although Miami is far from home, I truly feel that I have been welcomed with open arms...and it doesn't hurt that I still get to speak Spanish everywhere I go!"
Feeling welcomed in Miami has only strengthened his commitment to giving back — a drive that now guides his role as president of the Engineering Student Council.
What does serving as President of ESC mean to you?
Being ESC president is a huge honor. I've always been someone that wants to give back to his communities, so the fact that everyone was willing to trust me with this responsibility is something I am incredibly proud of. Beyond the actual title, it’s an amazing chance to amplify the voices of engineering students, strengthen our community, and make sure our college continues to be a place where students feel empowered to lead, innovate, and thrive.
What is your vision for the ESC this year, and what goals are you most excited to achieve?
I have two big goals for ESC this year. First, I want to continue strengthening our community—whether that’s through College-wide events like E-Week and wellness initiatives, or by helping all of our College of Engineering student organizations thrive. Second, I want to celebrate the University of Miami’s 100-year legacy by spotlighting the College of Engineering and bringing back traditions that connect us to that history. It's also a great time to start some new ones—keep your eye out during Homecoming and E-Week this year!
How does ESC support engineering students, and why should more students get involved?
ESC is here to make sure engineering students have a voice and a platform. We advocate for resources, help promote engineering organizations and organize events that make the College of Engineering feel like one giant family. Whether it’s connecting with alumni, celebrating E-Week, or addressing student concerns with faculty, ESC is the bridge between students and the larger college. I think more students should get involved because it’s one of the best ways to shape your own experience here. The more perspectives we bring in, the stronger and more representative ESC becomes.
What initiatives or events can students look forward to in the upcoming year?
A big one is always going to be Engineers Week (E-week). It's filled with so many great events, such as the Trivia night at the Rat, the basketball game, the Block Party, a new Fun Run, and so many more events organized by our amazing student organizations. However, this year I would also keep a special eye out for our Wellness Events and Alumni events!
How do you plan to strengthen the connection between ESC, student organizations, and the broader College of Engineering community?
Collaboration is going to be key this year. I want ESC to serve as a hub where student organizations can coordinate, share resources, and avoid working in silos. We host regular roundtables with org leaders called the Council of Presidents, joint events that bring together groups across different disciplines, and stronger ties with the Dean’s office so student ideas translate into action.
What’s one message you’d like every engineering student to take away about ESC this year?
ESC isn’t some separate group—it’s yours. We exist to represent you, support you, and make sure your experience in the College of Engineering is the best it can be. So don't be afraid to reach out with anything you might want to improve. My message to all engineers is simple: don’t sit on the sidelines. Get involved in research, student organizations, and in your community. I hope to see everyone out there at all the events this year!
