Greek Life is Shaping Leaders

University of Miami Greek Life has been creating leaders for generations as one of the biggest student led organizations on campus. Students associated with the Greek Community take part in community service and philanthropy as well as build leadership and organization skills that can help them toward their professional goals.

This event brought together AKA members worldwide to talk about the buisness within the sorority.

The Association of Greek Letter Organizations, comprised of 26 fraternities and sororities, is grouped into four councils: Interfraternity Council, Multi-Cultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council and the Panhellenic Association. Each Greek Life organization prides themselves in leadership, community service, fundraising, and inclusivity.  With these ideals in play at all times, the students are able to represent these values at new heights, earning recognition for their hard work.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, informally known as AKA, Iota Nu Chapter prides themselves on their leadership within their chapter and across the country in the AKA Organization as a whole. Madison Smith, the current chapter president of the National Pan-Hellenic Chapter of AKA at UM, is proud of the work her sisters have accomplished over the past year and the opportunities they have had in leadership and professionalism.  “[myself] and membership chairman Kaila Spearman represented the Iota Nu Chapter at the 45th Leadership Fellows Cohort in Dallas, Texas. [We] joined 49 exceptional women for a transformative experience [and] engaged with diverse professionals, contributed to the Childhood Hunger Initiative Power Pack (CHIPP) by packing 702 meals for local students, and received valuable mentorship tailored to their career paths,” says Smith.

Another National Pan-Hellenic Chapter at UM, Delta Sigma Theta (Tau Rho), has been letting their creativity soar with a project that is important to their members about the importance of voting. They recently earned a grant from the national sorority to fund an event they are planning for this fall. “We plan to host it this semester, it should be called Dinner & Democracy. We plan to bring in speakers and encourage students to participate in voting. We will be giving away free dinner to everyone that RSVPs and attends, and sweatshirts that encourage voting,” says Aniya Dyer, chapter president.

The interfraternity council at UM consists of 12 chapters of national fraternities. They to, strive on the importance of scholarship and philanthropy and have been able to reach those goals a variety of ways.  Lambda Chi Alpha, Epsilon-Omega Zeta, received the 2024 Grand High Alpha Award from the Lambda Chi Alpha General Assembly. Current chapter president, Joshua Abel, reflected on the recognition, “this prestigious award is the highest recognition given to chapters by the office of administration and the board of directors. It is a testament to our chapter’s commitment to excellence, leadership, and the strong bonds of brotherhood we have cultivated since our refounding back in 2020.”

Along with Lambda Chi, the University of Miami chapter of Beta Theta Pi, Eta Beta, also earned some noteworthy recognitions. This summer the brothers of Beta accepted two honors: Most improved Chapter Award and the Virginia Tech Award, which according to chapter president Sebastian Feldman, “recognizes the chapter with the highest differential GPA between the national and campus averages, as well as significant academic improvements over the year.” Sebastian was more than honored to accept the award on behalf of his brothers. “These achievements reflect the hard work of our brothers and their dedication towards our chapter,” said Feldman.

Greek Life has been able to encapsulate students who are passionate about community and engagement and have given them the leadership experience to thrive. From representing their chapter at national conferences, to leading local volunteering and philanthropy, students involved in Greek organizations have been able to accomplish astounding things within their community and in the world.
