These questions were answered for participants who attended the 3D Printing Awareness workshop in the McArthur Engineering Building between February 20-21. The event was organized by Prannoy Suraneni, an assistant professor in the UM College of Engineering’s (CoE) Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering (CAE), and Diana Arboleda, senior lecturer in the CAE.
Suraneni and Arboleda used A Seed for Success (SEEDS) “You Choose Leadership” award and co-funding from CoE to engage more than 30 UM faculty, staff and graduate students in conversations about increasing 3D printing awareness on campus.
Speakers from areas of UM academic technologies, architecture, art, construction, health, communications and manufacturing, gathered to discuss 3D printing resources on campus, as well as methods to increase 3D printing interdisciplinary awareness.
“We wanted to connect a diverse group of individuals on campus working on various aspects of 3D printing,” Suraneni said. “Through this workshop, we aim to foster diversity and interdisciplinary work in the broad area of 3D Printing.”
The workshop challenged participants to introduce and incorporate 3D printing into teaching architecture, art, engineering, communication, history, medicine, etc.
The Office of Faculty Affairs awards a number of $2,500 SEEDS “You Choose Leadership” awards each year, and faculty members from any discipline may apply. SEEDS is a UM-wide program that covers all disciplines across all three of University of Miami campuses. SEEDS continues to support diversity and career development, and is gradually expanding its constituency. Their ultimate goal is to enhance diversity and success across all UM Colleges.
