When the Knight Center for Music Innovation opened in October 2023, it ushered in a thrilling new era at the Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music that continues to redefine how music is made, taught and experienced at the University of Miami.
Under the transformative leadership of recently retired Dean Shelton G. “Shelly” Berg, and in partnership with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Knight Center’s scope grew from a recital hall to a cutting-edge performance center and hub for creative expression. Through an initial naming grant and a subsequent investment to integrate advanced digital and acoustical technologies, Knight Foundation’s support was instrumental in realizing the vision for a world-class 25,000-square-foot performance space on the University’s Coral Gables Campus.
Now, an additional $2 million commitment from the foundation will support the ongoing needs of the Knight Center’s technical infrastructure, sustaining its advanced audio, video, lighting, recording, broadcast and other technology.
The grant is in honor of Berg, who stepped down from his position as dean this past spring after 19 years of groundbreaking and visionary leadership.
“Knight Foundation’s partnership with the University of Miami has long reflected a shared belief that investing in local institutions helps strengthen the cultural and civic life of our community. The Frost School has been an important part of that story, and this commitment helps ensure that the Knight Center for Music Innovation remains a vibrant resource for students, artists and audiences across South Florida,” said Maribel Pérez Wadsworth, president and CEO, Knight Foundation.
“Honoring Dean Shelly Berg through this endowment feels especially meaningful because his leadership helped shape the center into a place where creativity, technology and public engagement come together,” Wadsworth added. “We’re proud to help sustain that legacy and support the center’s future, and equally proud to honor Dean Berg’s visionary leadership.”
Serona Elton, professor and interim vice dean at the Frost School, hailed this latest commitment from Knight as a fitting recognition of Berg’s remarkable legacy. “Under Dean Berg’s leadership, the Frost School embraced innovation as a defining characteristic and established itself as a model for the future of music education,” Elton said.
“Because innovation is never static, this endowment will help ensure that the Knight Center’s technology infrastructure remains current, allowing the building to fulfill its mission as a living laboratory for musical creativity, education and technological advancement,” Elton added.
Beyond the Knight Center, Knight Foundation has had a wide-ranging impact at the University. In recent years, the foundation has provided funding in support of updates at the Bill Cosford Cinema, digital engagement at the Lowe Art Museum, a venture lecture series at the Miami Business School, and research and convening on free expression online at the School of Law.
In 2021, the foundation created six Knight Foundation Endowed Chairs at the Frost Institute of Data Science and Computing. The School of Communication has two Knight Chairs, in visual journalism and interactive media.
