RAD LAB collaborates with Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center thanks to $50 million gift from Kenneth C. Griffin

Businessman and philanthropist Kenneth C. Griffin was celebrated for his landmark $50 million gift to Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, to fund the Transformational Cancer Research Building will allow the new 12-story, 244,000-square-foot facility on the Medical Campus to double its research footprint, accelerate efforts to develop new therapies, enhance care for patients, and expand access to clinical trials.

Dean Rodolphe el-Khoury’s RAD Lab, in collaboration with Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, developed an innovative approach to engage donors and stakeholders in the unveiling of the Griffin Cancer Research Building. A team led by Indrit Alushni  and Danilo Guzman designed interactive VR and AR presentations that offered 3D experiences of the new cancer research facility.

“By leveraging these immersive technologies,” says Research Associate Alushani, “we hope to transform the traditional user engagement process into a dynamic and interactive journey.” Indeed, these experiences do more than visualize the building’s architecture; they provide a deeply engaging encounter with the future of cancer research. Donors can now not only see but also feel the impact of their contribution as they navigate through the envisioned spaces of the Griffin Cancer Research Building. This innovative approach not only fosters a deeper connection between donors and the project but also amplifies awareness and support for cancer research endeavors.

The ceremony, held on the Schoninger Research Quadrangle, took place on 305 Day, Miami’s day of self-celebration, and during the event, Cava declared Griffin “Mr. 305” in recognition of his many contributions to the city.
