The day ended with student poster presentations from two of our summer health disparities research groups: MHIRT and FL Blue (Health Disparities Summer Research Program at UM SONHS’). After careful review and consideration, the “Best Student Poster Presentation” was awarded to Public Health student, Erika Redding.
EL CENTRO Local to Global Health Disparities Research Day
The day began with an informal exchange between students and special guest, Professor Simon Stewart, followed by a keynote presentation, “Equal hearts for all – a critical role for health services research.” Professor Simon Stewart is a prominent international expert who mentored one of our very own SONHS’ undergraduate students’ this summer in the Global Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Training Program (MHIRT) in Melbourne, Australia. Stewart is the Inaugural Director of the Mary MacKillop Institute for Health Research in Melbourne, Australia. A National Health & Medical Research Council of Australia (NHMRC) Principal Research Fellow he is also the Director of the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence to Reduce Inequality in Heart Disease and is Principal Investigator of a prestigious NHMRC Program Grant. For the past 20 years his twin focus of research has been to undertake large-scale population and community-based studies to understand an evolving burden of heart disease and, in response, to develop innovative models of care to improve related health outcomes.
