Celebrate Black History Month with SONHS

The Multicultural Nursing Students Association (MNSA) chapter at the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies (SONHS) is 134 members strong. In collaboration with SONHS faculty and other campus organizations, MNSA welcomes all to a series of events planned throughout February to celebrate Black History Month 2024. These include:

  • Black in White Panel, Wednesday, February 7, 6 pm, Shalala Student Center (SCC) Activities Room. Hosted by MNSA and 100 Strong, this panel event will also feature a Q&A and networking with medical professionals, as well as an opportunity to take free professional headshots. Business casual attire recommended but not required. Refreshments provided.

  • Cultural Competency Workshop, Thursday, February 15, 7:30 pm, Mahoney-Pearson Classrooms. The workshop is aimed at equipping health care students with the skills and knowledge needed to provide culturally sensitive and inclusive care and effectively engage with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Light refreshments.

  • MNSA Information Table, Thursday, February 22, 11 am-2 pm, in front of the M. Christine Schwartz Center for Nursing and Health Studies at SONHS. The MNSA executive board will hand out educational brochures about African Americans in health care and share resources with future nursing students. Snacks provided.

  • Sandwich Run, Saturday, February 24, 1 pm, SCC Activities Room. In coordination with the nonprofit organization Lifting Our Voices and 100 Strong, MNSA is packing meals to give to homeless shelters, women and children centers, and other community partners. Last year’s Sandwich Run was a huge success, with over 300 sandwiches delivered. This year the aim is to make and distribute 600 sandwiches.

In addition to the above events, Dr. Brenda Owusu, MNSA’s faculty advisor, will be among a trio of University of Miami leaders featured Wednesday, February 21, on a panel celebrating Black History Month, titled “Leadership Insights: Authenticity, Courage, and Belonging.” You can register here.
