School leaders reaffirm health care exchange in Dominican Republic

The University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies (SONHS) in Coral Gables, Florida, and Clínica Universitaria Unión Médica del Norte in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, have renewed their academic, educational, and research collaboration agreement, reaffirming a shared commitment to advancing health care training and global exchange.

The renewal ceremony was led at Clínica Unión Médica in June by Dr. Julián Sued, President of the Board of Directors of Clínica Unión Médica; SONHS Dean Dr. Hudson Santos; and Dr. Johis Ortega, SONHS Associate Dean for Hemispheric and Global Initiatives; along with Dr. Natalia Gracia, Board Member, and Dr. Javiela Tejada, Medical Director, of Clínica Unión Médica.

This partnership, which has spanned nearly a decade, has provided enriching clinical education and cultural immersion opportunities for undergraduate and graduate nursing students from the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies. It also has supported professional development and knowledge exchange with health care personnel at Clínica Unión Médica.

“This collaboration has been truly transformative,” said Dr. Ortega. “It has provided our students with meaningful international clinical experiences while contributing to the professional growth of the clinical staff at Clínica Unión Médica. These reciprocal exchanges deepen our students’ understanding of global health and strengthen the delivery of culturally competent care.”

Dean Santos highlighted the institutional value of sustained international partnerships:

“The renewal of this agreement is a testament to our ongoing commitment to global health education and to training the next generation of nurse leaders through international collaboration. We are proud to continue this important relationship with Clínica Unión Médica.”

Through this agreement, both institutions reaffirm their shared mission to prepare health professionals who are equipped to meet the evolving needs of diverse communities across borders.
