With the school year now in full swing, your email inbox, mailbox, and school announcements are likely full of invitations to attend college fairs and to meet with university representatives visiting your school.

To make the most of your meeting, we recommend preparing a list of questions. Make sure you’re specific. Instead of “How is your psychology program?” you’ll get much more valuable information if you ask, for example, “I’m interested in public health in developing countries; does your school offer anything that will help me stay involved with this passion of mine?”

To get you started on your list, we compiled our Top 8 Questions to Ask College Admission Representatives:

1. What opportunities does this college/university offer that will help me meet my post-college goals?

Think about interesting and impactful programs and opportunities like studying abroad, research opportunities, internship opportunities, etc., that will help you meet your goals post-college.

2. How will the campus community push me out of my comfort zone?

After all, we don’t go to college to stay stagnant. Things like diversity numbers, international student representation, and competing schools of thought present on campus will help you answer this question.

3. I’m passionate about X, Y, and Z; what is there for me at your school?

This will help you assess how the school will help you grow—academically, professionally, and personally.

4. What are some of the most popular traditions on campus?

We all have them. These examples will give you a glimpse into the culture of the school.

5. The academic transition from high school to college is tough for everyone; what academic support services do you have on your campus to help me succeed?

You may not think you’ll take advantage of writing centers, tutoring services, and the like, but trust me, you’ll be happy that you asked.

6. I’m nervous about moving away from my home and my friends; how can you help me navigate this new social culture?

Orientations and first-year programs will help you meet people and introduce you to the resources that are available for you to use.

7. How do students get involved with the community?

There are always ways to get off campus and into the real world, whether it is through community service or meaningful work with the local community.

8. How can I stay in touch with you if I have any other questions?

Many admission officers will have business cards with them. Most of us make it easy to find us on our websites too!
