At the University of Miami, you will be guided and supported through these life adjustments. Our student body has access to the tools and resources needed for a smooth transition. Hear from students as they look back at their first year.

When junior Tommy Sullivan thinks back at his favorite memory of his first year, one stands out among the rest: “It was the first time I went live with ‘In the Trenches,’ my segment on SportsDesk, a UMTV show.” UM has enabled Tommy to gain experience in his career choice early on, and that sense of place can be very rewarding. “I get to talk about the UM football team and break their games down, which is something I’ve wanted to do since I was born.”

Not only do students explore their passions and polish their skills during their first year, but many also build relationships that help the transition into college go smoothly.

Tyler Stimmel, a sophomore at UM, wouldn’t change a single aspect of his first year. He says, “I learned a lot more about myself during the first semester of my first year than I had in my entire life. Living in a new city thousands of miles from home can be scary, but the people that I met at UM made the transition easy.” Our UM community is a friendly and inviting space, where every student finds their group or creates it.

As for Dana Franco, a UM senior, it was joining a Greek organization that made all the difference for her. “Joining a Panhellenic sorority the spring semester of my first year was a great way to make new friends and get more involved on campus!” she says. Greek life is involved with the University in many ways, from philanthropic events to “Greek Week,” which is a week of exciting school-run events.

So, if you’ve enrolled at the University of Miami, get excited! Look forward to your first year at UM as it will be different but so worth it. Four years go by fast, so enjoy every minute of it.
