1. Start with a Fresh Email Address
Before you even log in, make sure you’re using an email address you’ll regularly check throughout the entire application process. This is the perfect opportunity to create a professional, polished email address that will serve you well beyond your college applications.
2. Know Your Test Score Strategy
For the University of Miami’s Fall 2025 application cycle, submitting test scores is optional. This means you can choose whether or not they’re considered during the review process. Regardless of your decision, all applicants are eligible for merit scholarships. If you’re aiming for our Premier Scholarships, be sure to submit your Early Decision I or Early Action application by November 1!
3. Shine in the Extracurricular Section
Don’t stress about having the “right” extracurricular activities. This section is your chance to showcase who you are beyond the classroom. Whether you spent your time volunteering, working a part-time job, leading a club, or providing care to your family, share how these experiences have shaped you. Authenticity is key–let your personality and passion shine through.
4. Ace the Essay
The essay is often the most nerve-wracking part of the application, but it’s also the best place to let your individuality shine. Don’t be afraid to have a little fun with it—write about something that excites you. Whether it's a quirky hobby or a personal challenge, your essay should tell a compelling story that only you can tell. Remember to seek feedback from a few trusted people who know you well and can help ensure your voice remains authentic.
And don’t forget the supplemental essay! This prompt, which is only for the University of Miami, is additional to the Common App essay.

5. Keep Track of UM’s Requirements
Every school has its own set of requirements, and UM is no different. Certain programs, like those in the Frost School of Music, the School of Architecture, and our Theater BFA, have specific audition or portfolio requirements. If you’re unsure about anything, don’t hesitate to reach out to your admission counselor—they’re there to help!
6. Don’t Forget About the Application Fee
UM’s application fee is $70 and nonrefundable. Your high school counselor will know if you’re eligible for a fee waiver, so be sure to reach out. There are options available, so don’t let this deter you from applying.
7. Take Care of Yourself
Finally, remember to take care of yourself throughout the application process. It can be stressful, but it’s important to enjoy your senior year as well. Take breaks, do something for fun, and keep things in perspective. You’ve got this!
