We know it’s hard to believe, but professors have whole lives outside of the classroom (wild, right?!). We sat down with some professors to give you a glimpse of the human behind the title and the syllabus. It turns out they have favorite foods and pets and hobbies, too. Professors… they’re just like us!

Dr. Latoya Lewis, Associate Professor of Clinical

What part of your work makes you most proud?

The part that makes me the proudest is mentoring and educating pre-licensure nurses. It is amazing to see students' growth from their first nursing courses toward graduation and see them increase their level of comfort, confidence, and competence in various patient care settings. I focus on addressing the holistic needs of students needs are addressed and providing support to promote educational success. 

What makes your day better?

A couple of things make my day better such as having a purpose-driven life that includes teaching, mentoring, writing, working out, sauna, family time, and having meaningful connections.

What is the most exciting thing happening in your field right now?

The most exciting thing that is happening in the nursing profession right now is nurse-driven initiatives, simulation, political advocacy, and integrating social determinants of health into care.

How do you recharge?

I recharge through traveling, working out, yoga, and doing outdoor activities. I prefer to live life instead of letting time pass by.

What is the most unusual food you have eaten?

The most unusual food that I have eaten is Iguana.
