PhD Candidate Wins Top Award at 10th Advances in Cement-Based Materials Conference

Congratulations to Nima Hosseinzadeh, a PhD candidate in the University of Miami College of Engineering’s (UM CoE) Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering (CAE), who was named the YouTube Research Video contest winner for his two–minute video highlighting his poster, “Hydration, strength and shrinkage of cementitious materials mixed with simulated desalination brine,” at the 10th Advances in Cement-Based Materials Conference. The poster described the use of a waste material – desalination brine, in making concrete, which could lead to significant global reductions in fresh water consumption.

Concrete is the most-used building material in the world—so every advance in understanding how it behaves presents an opportunity to reduce greenhouse gases, advance construction engineering and improve quality of life around the globe. Organized by the American Ceramic Society’s (ACerS) Cements Division, the 10th Advances in Cement-Based Materials took place June 16–18, 2019, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois.

“The conferences is one of the few opportunities engineers have to present their cement research to other researchers, while also developing themselves as new professionals,” explained Suraneni. “We all had time to hear from and speak one-on-one with other researchers on a range of topics facing the cement industry.”

Nima attended the conference alongside fellow UM CoE researchers Sivakumar Ramanathan, a PhD candidate in CAE, and Prannoy Suraneni, an assistant professor in CAE.

More information on the conference is available from the Cements Division of the American Ceramic Society.
