Congratulations to Miroslav Kubat of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering on having co-authored a paper recently published in Nature Neuroscience – one of the most prestigious and most frequently cited journals of today’s science (impact factor exceeding 20).

The paper, “Epigenomic signatures underpin the axonal regenerative ability of dorsal root ganglia sensory neurons,” examines why nerve cells from peripheral nervous system can regenerate following injury, whereas those in the central nervous system (CNS) cannot. The study introduces the first epigenomic map–a mapping of the biological processes that turn genes “on” and “off” and, thereby, enable peripheral nerve cells to regenerate. The findings, which were made by the use of novel machine learning techniques, have a great potential to help predict regeneration after injury.
