Engineering Professor Leads Study to Detect COVID-19 in Sewage

Scientists at the University of Miami developed a study that detects the COVID-19 virus and its variants, including Omicron, in our wastewater. This initiative is aimed at preventing emerging outbreaks since it can detect the virus up to four days before a positive result.

Helena Solo-Gabriele, a professor in the College of Engineering’s Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering, and her team have been studying the wastewater of the University of Miami in Coral Gables since September of 2020. This year, the team is testing the wastewater of the plant of Virginia Key, which serves more than 800,000 people in Miami Dade County.
