Pratim Biswas, dean of the University of Miami College of Engineering and a professor of chemical, environmental, and materials engineering, has been named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), recognizing his significant contributions to science, technology, and innovation.
Biswas, a world-renowned expert in aerosol science and technology, holds 17 U.S. patents. His work includes the development of particulate measurement techniques that have advanced air quality monitoring for industrial and mining applications. He has also been a leader in aerosol synthesis and the application of nanomaterials, notably for sustainable technologies such as smart, precision agriculture. These innovations optimize fertilizer dispersion, reduce water use, and mitigate environmental runoff, offering transformative solutions for modern agriculture.
Over his career, Biswas has authored more than 475 peer-reviewed journal articles, resulting in over 37,000 citations and an H-index of 100. His work has led to the founding of two startups, Applied Particle Technology and Smart Aerosol Technologies, which commercialize his groundbreaking technologies in industries ranging from agriculture to mining.
“Being named an NAI Fellow is both an honor and a reflection of the collaborative spirit at the University of Miami,” Biswas said. “I am proud to contribute to advancing research and engineering innovations that benefits society.”
Recognized internationally, Biswas is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). His accolades include the Fuchs Award, the premier international honor in aerosol science, and numerous other prestigious awards for his contributions to engineering and technology.
The NAI Fellowship is the highest professional distinction awarded to academic inventors. This year’s class of 170 Fellows collectively holds over 5,000 patents and has made significant contributions to society and the economy. The 2024 Fellows will be inducted at the NAI Annual Meeting on June 26, 2025, in Atlanta.
