To showcase the transformational research of our graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, the Graduate School will host the first university-wide Graduate and Postdoctoral Research Symposium on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at the Shalala Student Center on the Coral Gables Campus.

The theme of the symposium will be The Art of Communicating Across Disciplinary Lines, challenging scholars to translate their research to a broad and interdisciplinary audience.

The application deadline is Wednesday, January 16, 2019. Abstract submission is required as part of the application (350 words max). Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows can choose to participate in a poster presentation, oral presentation, or Ted-like talk.

  • Poster presentation: Poster presenters will stand by their poster, explaining their research in 5-8 minutes per visitor/judge, and allowing an additional 5 minutes for questions and answers. No computers or extra aids may be used during a poster presentation. The poster board dimensions will be 4'x6'. The Graduate School will not be responsible for poster printing costs.
  • Oral presentation: Oral presenters will be given 15 minutes for the presentation and 5 minutes for questions and answers in an intimate setting. Presenters will be grouped with others presenters of similar topics. Use of PowerPoint slides is optional, but if used, the presenter will be in control of slide transitions. Presenters may use notes.
  • Ted-like talk: Ted-like talk presentations will be scripted, well-produced, and strictly limited to 10 minutes. Minimal PowerPoint slides must be used and have to be timed, so presenters will not have control of slide transitions during the presentation. The talk will be delivered on a stage using a lapel microphone and without notes or a podium.
