The Children & Youth Law Clinic provides legal services to children in the foster care system and former foster youth who have aged out of the system. CYLC uses a holistic approach, representing clients on a wide range of legal issues including dependency, mental health, disability, education, independent living, immigration, public benefits, landlord-tenant and other general civil matters. CYLC also engages in law reform litigation, as well as legislative and policy advocacy on issues impacting low-income children.
The Health and Elder Law Clinic assists low-income clients who are referred through the clinic's partnerships with healthcare providers including the UM School of Nursing and Health Studies and Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. Students represent clients in federal and state administrative hearings and in a variety of courts on health-related legal matters. They also prepare wills, durable power of attorney documents and guardianship documents. In addition, students engage in policy and impact work on a variety of topics related to healthcare including HIV and confidentiality issues and immigrant eligibility rules. In addition to legal services, the Clinic coordinates community outreach initiatives, conducting "Know Your Rights" presentations to client groups and teaches healthcare professionals and social workers how to make a difference in a client's legal case.
