Dear Students Graduating in May,
Many of you have been asking for details concerning the May Graduation. While more detailed information will be available soon, the information below will get you started.
Commencement Ceremony: Saturday, May 14, 10:00 a.m. BankUnited Center on campus. Students will report to the Field House at 9:00 a.m. You may invite as many guests as you like – no tickets required, no limit on the numbers you may bring. The Ceremony will last two hours, so you can make your post-graduation plans accordingly. This is only for law graduates, so parking and seating will be adequate.
Reception for Graduates: Friday, May 13, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Details to follow.
Application for Graduation: All persons expecting to graduate in either May or July must apply on MyUM to graduate. Do this immediately! Your credits will be checked based upon those who apply to graduate, Every year there are at least a few who never apply to graduate, their names are not on the program, they are not certified to the Bar, etc., because they did not follow directions. Those people should never be licensed to advocate for another!
July Graduates: Those who are graduating in July and would like to walk in the May Commencement should respond to this message with that intention so we can add you to the program.
Dean's Certificate: All graduates who are taking the Bar Exam in July 2011 must have a dean's certification from the School of Law.
For those taking the Florida Bar Exam, you must complete the blue form in the Office of the Registrar. We will then send the Florida certification based on that request.
For other jurisdictions, follow the directions given on that state's Web site. Most often, you must supply the Dean's Certificate for the Registrar to complete. Look here: http://www.ncbex.org/bar-admissions/offices/
Transcripts: A final transcript from the University of Miami can be ordered online through MyUM. Be sure to check to wait for the transcript to be sent after the degree has been conferred. If you have it sent now, you will just have to resend it in June.
MPRE: If you have not yet taken and passed the MultiState Professional Responsibility Examination, it is offered on March 5. Go here to register: www.ncbex.org See the representatives on the Bricks about review materials and sessions to prepare for the MPRE. This is not a given – one must prepare. Also, it is not the Bar Exam, so if you have already passed, it is only a very low hurdle compared to the real thing in July!
Disclosures: I can send you a bunch of war stories from current students and from recent graduates who are having difficulty with Bar admission due to carelessness regarding non-disclosure of matters that were required for disclosure. If you have any questions about any of this, we can set an appointment for one day in early February.
By the way, you must pass your Spring 2011 classes, or you won't be going anywhere!
