The Havana native served in the state House of Representatives from 1995-1999. He also served as chairman of the joint legislative audition committee and was a certified public accountant at his law firm before joining the bench.

The 65-year-old Rodriguez-Chomat begins his first term as judge in the criminal division, replacing Judge William Johnson who stepped aside. Rodriguez-Chomat was automatically elected in April.

Rodriguez-Chomat said the bench would benefit from his 35 years of legal experience and said his connections to "many friends in Tallahassee" would help bring increased funding to the court system.
