"As a school, we can accomplish so much more if we work together as one group, instead of many separate groups, to raise money to aid our own community," said law student Tashalyn Cosimo.
While event details are still coming together, the cause, which was decided by a vote by student organization members, has been chosen.
Proceeds from Philanthropy Week will benefit the South Florida Bike Coalition in honor of Natasha Pettigrew.
Pettigrew, a third-year Miami Law student, was struck and killed by an SUV while riding her bicycle on Sept. 19, 2010. Pettigrew had taken a leave of absence from law school and was campaigning for the U.S. Senate seat in Maryland as the Green Party Candidate at the time of her death. While at Miami Law, Pettigrew was well-known for advocating for children and the underprivileged.
The Student Bar Association hopes that Philanthropy Week will serve as a catalyst to bring the Miami Law community even closer together for years to come.
Miami Law has also taken the steps to stand up for safety. A Natasha's Memorial Ride will take place on Feb. 26. Starting at 9 a.m., bike riders will gather on The Bricks to embark on an approximately 10-mile bike ride through Coral Gables and South Miami, retracing some of the routes Pettigrew used to train on for various triathlons. Proceeds will benefit the South Florida Bike Coalition.
