Miami Law Moot Court Team Wins Best Brief Award

Last week, Miami Law sent two teams to the Regional competition of the ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition (NAAC) in Boston. One of the teams – which consisted of Kara Romagnino, Daniel Casamayor, and Jake Monk – won the Best Brief Award for the entire Regional Competition, in addition to amassing a 3-1 record in the oral presentations.

Thirty-nine teams participated in the Boston Regional competition. Miami Law's other team, comprised of Jacquelyn Costoya, Ted McNamara, and Skyler Hill, made an extremely strong showing against some very difficult opponents. Together, the teams defended last year's UM Regional Champion status and nearly made it to Nationals.

"It was quite an honor and we're thrilled about it. What is particularly impressive is that both of our teams are made up entirely of second-year students when many of their opponents were third-year students who'd previously competed in this or other moot court competitions," said their coach, Harvey Sepler, Assistant Public Defender for Miami-Dade County and Adjunct Professor at the law school.

NAAC is regarded as one of the more challenging and prestigious moot court competitions in the country. One-hundred fifty teams participate in the regional sites, from which only 16 teams are invited to the National Competition.
