During the one-week spring course students studied the big picture of corporate criminal enforcement, focusing on areas of law that are common to any corporate crime. Independently, they were tasked with writing a 20 to 25 page paper that explores a more specific topic which they will submit towards the end of spring.
"The students did an excellent job," said Arlen when speaking about how students chose topics to explore for their final papers. "They chose interesting and challenging topics and did an excellent job with the research. I was particularly impressed with the fact that they were willing to submit early drafts, and completely rewrite them."
Professor Arlen is the Norma Z. Paige Professor of Law at New York University (NYU) Law School and Co-Director of NYU's Center on Law, Economics and Organization. In addition to having taught at NYU for eight years, Arlen has served on the faculties of USC Law School and Emory Law School and has been a visiting professor at Harvard Law School, Yale Law School, USC Law School, and the California Institute of Technology. She is a co-founder, former President, and a current member of the Board of Directors of the Society for Empirical Legal Studies and has twice served on the Board of Directors of the American Law and Economics Association. At NYU, Arlen teaches classes on Corporations, Corporate Crime and Law and Economics.
Not only was Arlen impressed with students, she also found the faculty particularly helpful.
"I was very impressed at the degree to which many of the students were able to benefit from additional help from other professors at Miami," she said.
During Arlen's fall short course in Legal and Economic Analysis of Torts and Medical Malpractice Liability, she found Professor Mary Coombs, who is well known in the area of medical malpractice, particularly supportive to the students.
"I was impressed with her level of commitment to the students, and the students' commitment to their work.
