While the mayor could not be in attendance, his Constituent Service Coordinator, Natasha Colebrooks-Williams, presented the framed proclamation honoring BLSA at the banquet.
"It was truly an honor to have Mayor Andre D. Pierre, an alum of our law school, recognize UM BLSA for its achievements this year," 3L and BLSA Vice-President Lauren Ferguson says.
Held in downtown Miami, the formal dinner reception included the presentation of several awards, such as the first annual Natasha Pettigrew Service Award and the Outstanding Law Professor Award.
3L Rob Collins received the first ever Natasha Pettigrew Service Award for his outstanding service to the Miami community. The Outstanding Law Professor Award went to Miami Law Professor D. Marvin Jones.
The Miami Law chapter of the Black Law Students Association has had a busy year, hosting everything from a diversity summit to a fundraising brunch supporting Miami Law alumni who are suffering from cancer or other health related issues and, therefore, having trouble managing the cost of their treatments or facing homelessness. In addition, the Miami Law BLSA team made quarter-finalists in the mock trial and moot court competitions at the South Regional Black Law Students Association (SRBLSA) Convention.
Next year, Miami Law's BLSA plans to continue providing Black law students with a forum for expressing their unique needs and concerns, while utilizing the collective resources of the member chapters to improve the quality of legal education and effectuate the goals of the National Black Law Students Association.
