Miami Law Graduates Publish in Prestigious Journal

Miami Law is steadily gaining recognition as an active force in international arbitration as two of its recent graduates, Patrick Miller, JD '10 and Anna Tumpovskiy, LL.M. '10, have published articles in this field in The International Law Quarterly, a publication of the Florida Bar International Law Section. This is a welcome development for the law school, which is situated within the epicenter of a growing international arbitration market.

The articles evolved out of specialized international arbitration courses, which requires students to write papers of publishable quality, said Judy Freedberg, Miami Law's Director of International Arbitration Professional Programs.

"This rigorous requirement pays off when recent graduates are able to publish articles so early in their careers," said Freedberg.

The Quarterly is becoming a leading journal for all areas of international law.

"It's especially validating when such pre-eminent faculty approve of your work," said Patrick Miller who, while a student, participated in the Miami-Leipzig Exchange Program where he collaborated with a German counterpart in order to craft presentations on international law issues to be discussed during forums in both Miami and Leipzig. Currently, Miller is interning with the International Arbitration Group at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in Paris until October. His article is titled "The Necessity Defense in Bilateral Investment Treaties: Looking Forward."

"This surely strengthened my resolve to submit my work to outside journals," he said.

Tumpovskiy, who published the article "Tension in International Arbitration over Joinder of Non-Signatories: Paris Court of Appeal Decides Dallah Real Estate and Tourism Holding Co. v. Republic of Pakistan," is an international litigation, arbitration and solvency attorney for the Victoria Law Group.
