HOPE Day began in the early morning at The Bricks with registration and breakfast. Students later met in their respective groups and with their site leaders before heading into the community. Students engaged in a day of repairs, clean-ups and renovations. They also participated in activities with children, elderly, homeless families, and more.
One team of eager volunteers worked at Abriendo Puertas in the Little Havana neighborhood. The community-based human services agency offers programs in Adult and Community Education, Family Support, and Child and Youth Development. HOPE Day volunteers assisted children in sorting toiletries and canned goods collected by the center to donate to Camillus House. Also, volunteers helped children create birthday cards to be distributed to residents at local nursing homes.
"At the University of Miami School of Law, our students recognize that the privilege of a legal education comes with a responsibility to help others," said Marni Lennon, Assistant Dean for Public Interest and Pro Bono. "We are thrilled to kick off the academic year with the most far-reaching HOPE Day ever."
