"His course in Derecho de Obligaciones is tremendously important for our JD students so they can be exposed to the Civil Law system and improve their knowledge of legal Spanish," said Director of International Graduate Law Programs Jessica Carvalho Morris who believes it is important for students to understand the basic differences between the Civil and Common Law systems in a multicultural and legal world.
Martinez Evora came to Miami Law from the University of Havana School of Law in Cuba where he received a Licenciado en Derecho with honors (J.D. equivalent, summa cum laude). He started as an LL.M student in International Law with a specialization in U.S. and Transnational Law for Foreign Lawyers, transferred to the J.D. program, and obtained a J.D. degree in 2011 at Miami Law. After immigrating to the U.S., he worked as a Senior Public Assistant for the Department of Children and Families.
"I am thrilled he was selected to be the Visiting Assistant Professor for this upcoming academic year," said Morris of the professor who was also a legal professor at the University of Havana. "I am confident he will be an amazing professor and that the student body will gain for his expertise."
While attending Miami Law, Martinez Evora participated in the Moot Madrid Competition in International Commercial Arbitration. The team made it to the quarterfinals and Martinez Evora was recognized at the third best oralist.
Now, he looks forward to his return to teaching. He truly feels he's in the right place, at the right time, and can positively impact students' lives.
"Once you're a professor, you want to be a professor your entire life," said Martinez Evora who strongly believes that with competitive and highly skilled courses such as the ones he will be teaching this fall, that "the University of Miami School of Law is going to be leading the United States in bilingual legal education."
