The event will be hosted by the Entertainment and Sports Law Society and the J.D./M.A. joint-degree program of the Law and Communications schools. Titled Covering Labor Issues in Professional Sports, the panel will include Jorge Sedano, host of The Jorge Sedano Show, which airs on 790 AM The Ticket; Tim Reynolds, a sports writer for the Associated Press; Ethan Skolnick, Miami Heat columnist for The Palm Beach Post; and Miami Law alumnus David Canter, president and CEO of DEC Management. The panel will be moderated by Adjunct Professor Donald Papy, who specializes in issues surrounding the law and the media.
Attendees can expect to hear different perspectives about the NFL's collective bargaining agreements, which have been in the media spotlight recently, and other issues. Jason Sosnovsky, president of the Entertainment and Sports Law Society, said that he aims to provide a deeper understanding of how the two professions — sports journalism and the law — function together.
"It's important for people working in entertainment sports to know where the media is trying to take their story," Sosnovsky said. "Are they looking for provocative headlines, or are they trying to build a good story?"
The event is open to the public. A reception will follow in the student lounge.
Participants can receive one CLE credit, pending approval by The Florida Bar.
