Guilford, who received two degrees from UM – a B.B.A. in 1951 and a J.D. in 1956 – was a senior partner at the law firm of Guilford & Associates, PA. A member of the Florida Bar since 1957, he practiced estate planning, administrative and real estate law. On several occasions, he represented UM before the Coral Gables City Commission regarding zoning and other real estate-related issues.
Guilford was chairman of the Alma Jennings Foundation, through which he was instrumental in awarding more than $1.6 million in grants to UM. At Miami Law, the Alma Jennings Foundation provided funds for the construction of the student lounge, which is named in the Foundation's honor. The Foundation also supported the Richard and Jeanette Fuller Hausler Endowed Scholarship Fund.
Devoted to his alma mater, Guilford was a former member of the Board of Trustees and the UM Citizens Board. He was also a member of the UM President's Council and a member of Iron Arrow, the University's highest honor and oldest tradition. Guilford served as past president of the UM Alumni Association and was the 2009 recipient of the Henry King Stanford Alumnus of the Year Award.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Guilford's favorite charities: the University of Miami School of Law, the Humane Society of Greater Miami, American Cancer Society, and Vizcayans.
