Nick Madigan Named Executive Director of Communications at Miami Law

The University of Miami School of Law has appointed former New York Times correspondent Nick Madigan, an award-winning reporter with three decades of experience in daily journalism, as its Executive Director of Communications. He joined the university at the beginning of the fall semester.

In his new position, Madigan leads a team tasked with carrying out a vigorous outreach strategy for the law school. He manages its contacts with the news media and helps to deliver the institution's vision and message. Madigan's team creates the law school's publications, in print and online, and directs its efforts in public relations, marketing and social media.

Madigan, who most recently covered criminal justice for The Baltimore Sun, plays a crucial role in the dissemination of news about the law school's faculty, clinics, joint-degree offerings, LL.M. programs and other initiatives.

A native of New York City, Madigan was raised in San Sebastian, Spain, and has written from around the United States and more than 20 other countries, including France, Morocco, Australia, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Haiti, Grenada and Cuba.

As a national correspondent for The New York Times, he covered the trial of Michael Jackson in Santa Maria, Calif.; the abduction of Elizabeth Smart in Salt Lake City; the William Kennedy Smith case in Palm Beach, Fla., and numerous other stories.

Madigan is the former host of "Minding the Media" on KCRW, National Public Radio's affiliate in Santa Monica, Calif., where he was a staff reporter at The Outlook, a morning daily. Earlier, he had been on the staffs of The Palm Beach Post in Florida and United Press International in San Juan, P.R.

He was also a staff reporter for Variety, the entertainment industry trade paper in Los Angeles, and later joined The Baltimore Sun as its media writer. Over the years, he contributed to The Washington Post, The Miami Herald, The Miami News, The Christian Science Monitor, Newsweek, Esquire, Condé Nast Traveler, Palm Beach Illustrated Magazine, The New York Daily News and Il Giornale, in Milan. He began his career as an editorial assistant at The New York Times.

Madigan speaks Spanish fluently. He attended boarding schools in England and graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison with a Bachelor's degree in Journalism. He and his wife, Lauren Taylor Madigan, have a son, Sebastian.
