The viewing will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 13 in the downtown Miami offices of Legal Corps, which is hosting the event.
Champions of Change is a weekly initiative by President Obama and the White House to highlight Americans who are making an impact in their communities and helping the nation meet the challenges of the 21st century.
More than 100 law schools will be tuning in to this national, on-line conversation among law students and faculty, public service lawyers and Attorney General Eric Holder. A statement from Legal Corps said the event "promises to be a historic conversation about what lawyers can do to close the justice gap, and an exciting opportunity to encourage thousands of law students to step up their own pro-bono efforts."
During the event, 16 people will be honored at the White House for their exemplary public service, including Tom Saenz, president and CEO of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund; Jo-Ann Wallace, president and CEO of the National Legal Aid and Defender Association; and Michael Pinard, professor and director of Clinical Programs at the University of Maryland Francis Carey School of Law.
The goal is to "inspire students to add their talents to the effort to secure basic rights for all Americans," the Legal Corps statement said.
"As lawyers we are at the forefront of changing society though community service," Tamesha Keel, the director of Legal Corps, said in an interview. "We have the ability to make a change and make a difference. This event is a great opportunity to get involved."
