Cox's colleagues often referred to him as the people's advocate. Since 1983, Cox had worked at the law firm of Spilman Thomas & Battle, PLLC, in Charleston W. Va., where he died. His practice was in government relations, insurance regulatory work and environmental, telecommunications and corporate law.
"He was beloved by clients and colleagues alike," said Michael J. Basile, managing member at Spilman Thomas & Battle. "The entire Spilman family mourns the loss of a dear friend, skillful attorney, community servant and respected leader."
Cox served as counsel to the West Virginia Coal Development Authority while Rockefeller was governor in the late 1970s and early 1980's. He also served as a chairman of the board for the Charleston YMCA, the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation and in several roles for the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce. Cox also gave funds toward his alma mater.
The Best Lawyers in America recognized him in the areas of energy, environmental, government relations, insurance and natural resources law. He was also highly regarded by Super Lawyers in the areas of government relations, environmental and insurance coverage.
"We will miss him dearly and will endeavor to bring honor to his life's work by following in his footsteps, passionately devoting ourselves to counseling and advising clients with honor, integrity and excellence," Basile said.
Cox is survived by his wife, Ann Bradley, JD '76, who is also a member of the Spilman firm, and two children, Erin and Thomas.
