Dieck began the conversation by discussing the ethical implications of social networking, including Facebook friendships between lawyers and judges, blogging, and LinkedIn. Torrealba then spoke about new issues arising from Groupon-style advertising of legal services.
"It's amazing how social media is presenting new questions for legal ethics every day," said Dieck, who had intended to give the presentation back in February, a plan derailed by a scheduling conflict. "We had to update our presentation due to the various changes in the law since we first researched issues surrounding social media and legal ethics just months before."
The Ethics and Professional Responsibility Program was established in 1996 as an in-house program within the Center for Ethics and Public Service at the University of Miami School of Law. The program has dedicated countless student hours to public service and has educated thousands of members of the Florida Bench and Bar. As the students teach, they learn and often make a difference, prompting organizations to pause and reconsider their approaches to tough ethical dilemmas.
