The Miami Consortium is a joint initiative between the University of Miami's Center for Latin American Studies and FIU's Latin American and Caribbean Center. It was launched in 2011 to promote research and prompt public awareness of all aspects of Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as to stimulate relations with the United States and countries outside the Western Hemisphere. The lectures will be given by Professor Rogelio Perez-Perdomo, an eminent scholar in the law and society tradition. He has published numerous well-regarded books and articles on the profession of law in Latin America and the evolving concept of lawyers. He is a founder and former dean of the Universidad Metropolitana in Caracas, Venezuela, and is a regular visiting professor at Stanford Law School.
The first two talks in the series will be held at Miami Law, and the last two talks at FIU. The talks hosted at UM will be streamed to FIU, and vice versa.
The series launches on Monday, Jan. 23, at Miami Law with the lecture "Lawyers and the Transformation of Law Practice: From State's Hosts to Legal Service Providers." Miami Law Professor Keith Rosenn will serve as commentator. The lecture will be held at 4:00 p.m. in Room F108. A reception will follow in the Alma Jennings Foundation Student Lounge.
The subsequent lectures will focus on judges, law schools and legal academics in Latin America, and will serve to further the Consortium's goal of fostering national and international linkages, spur research and regional understanding, and provide cultural and academic exchanges.
