Students Run Ethics Training for Women Lawyers Association

Miami Law students Daniel Casamayor, Nykeah Cohen and Candice Lazar, from the Professional Responsibility and Ethics Program, recently presented a CLE ethics training for the Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association in Coral Gables. The students led attendees through three timely hypothetical situations, with topics that included the ethical issues involved in website advertising, legal outsourcing, blogging and vetting attorney fees.

"Those in attendance were all very engaged," Casamayor said. "The presentation addressed several cutting-edge issues in a live interactive format that gave attorneys the opportunity to discuss some of the increasingly prevalent issues that they encounter."

Kymberlee Smith, President of the Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association, later sent PREP a thank-you email in which she wrote, "The interactive discussions on evolving rules of ethics from the Florida Bar on mediums like Facebook, websites, and the use of social media in judicial campaigns, were great and we learned a great deal. The students were impressive. They did an incredible job preparing and they were very well informed and able to answer specific questions that may not have been addressed in the presentation."

The Professional Responsibility and Ethics Program was established in 1996 as an in-house program within the Center for Ethics and Public Service at the University of Miami School of Law. The program has dedicated countless student hours to public service and has educated thousands of members of the Florida Bench and Bar.
