The program, designed for new and developing nonprofits, will enable the administrators of such organizations to receive counsel on a full range of legal matters, including contracts, employment, corporate matters, and real estate issues. The lawyers will legal documents, assist with bylaws, articles of incorporation, help clear titles to land, prepare real estate documents, and review loan documents, among others tasks.
The evening sessions, described as "a unique opportunity" for nonprofit organizations, are being organized by the Pro Bono Committee of the Business Law Section of the Florida Bar in three places around the state. In Miami, the partners in the endeavor include the HOPE Public Interest Resource Center at the University of Miami School of Law; the Pro Bono Committee of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, and the Business Outreach Committee of the Dade County Bar Association.
Administrators who are uncertain whether their nonprofit needs legal advice can sign up for a "Legal Health Check-up."
"You can sit down with the attorney, who will help measure the legal health of your organization by asking you just a few questions," a statement from the organizers said. "This will give you, your executive director, and your board members enormous peace of mind. The expectation for the evening is that you will be able to consult with the attorney who can offer assistance on the spot or you both may determine that you need to arrange for an additional appointment at a later date for more complex legal issues."
