The Bankruptcy Skills Workshop will provide new and experienced attorneys and their paralegal staff with an enhanced understanding of the specialized field of bankruptcy. Because consumer bankruptcies have risen to an all-time high, it is crucial for lawyers to know the substantive and procedural components of bankruptcy law, local rules and filing requirements in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida.

The workshop, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. will focus on aspects of Chapter 13 and Chapter 7 consumer cases, including evidentiary considerations in lien stripping and valuation issues, procedures and ideas from three of the new Chapter 7 panel trustees, and frequently overlooked local rules. The program will include a panel discussion by the bankruptcy judges from the Miami, Broward and Palm Beach divisions of the Southern District of Florida, who will discuss their recent decisions.

In addition, Standing Chapter 13 trustees, Chapter 7 trustees, and staff counsel of the Office of the United States Trustee will provide practice pointers for debtor and creditor attorneys. Finally, counsel for the Florida Bar will discuss ethical considerations that arise frequently in bankruptcy cases.

The workshop will be held in Room E352 of the law school.
