The leading national forum for real property and trust and estate lawyers and the ABA's third largest section, RPTE has 25,000 members divided between the two areas of practice.
Portuondo is the primary force behind Heckerling's annual conference, the Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning, the largest of its kind in the nation. It brings together thousands of estate-planning professionals – attorneys, trust officers, accountants, insurance advisors and those in wealth management – to discuss and learn about the latest trends in the industry.
Portuondo is also the Director of the law school's Heckerling Graduate Program in Estate Planning, the only full-time graduate program leading to a master's degree in estate planning. The program explores the areas necessary to the development of a competent estate planner, including the applicable income and wealth transfer tax laws, planning strategies, fiduciary administration, drafting, and ethics.
Her appointment as chair, set to be announced formally at the ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago during the first week of August, follows five years of service on the Section's Executive Committee, and more than 15 years of service as a Section volunteer.
Portuondo earned a B.A., magna cum laude, from Wheaton College; a J.D., cum laude, from Georgetown University; and an LL.M. in Taxation from New York University. She joined Miami Law after practicing in the areas of tax and estate planning in New York and Miami.
