"I began law school with the intention of one day practicing in the field of international law," said Hickey, who graduated cum laude from Miami Law in December 2011. "I hope that this fellowship position will not only provide me with valuable experience in human rights work, but that it will also serve as a springboard into a full-time career in international law."
Hickey was the first Miami Law exchange student to attend Freie University in Berlin during the spring 2011 semester. She has a long-standing interest in German culture and language: Her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Florida is in French and German Studies, and she participated in a German exchange program during her undergraduate years. Hickey also served as a program coordinator at the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy in Berlin, where she directed a campaign to revive Amerika Haus-Berlin, an institution that provides German citizens an opportunity to learn more about American culture and politics.
"American lawyers approach international law in a much different manner than their German counterparts," Hickey said about her experience with the exchange program at Freie University. "It was an eye-opening experience to be the only American lawyer in a room full of German lawyers. This allowed me to learn a completely different legal perspective, which will help me further my career."
During her three years at Miami Law, Hickey served as editor of the National Security and Armed Conflict Law Review and secretary of the International Law Society. She also participated in the Leipzig-Miami seminar.
