Former Deputy Assistant Secretary at U.S. Department of Commerce Speaks with Students

As part of the 64th Annual Homecoming Celebration, distinguished alumnus Joseph Bogosian, JD '92, spoke with students about success after graduation. The breakfast, held on Friday in the Faculty Meeting Room, offered insights to the globalization of the field and how his leadership skills developed at Miami Law has continued to affect his career.

"I wasn't a straight to law school kind of student," said Bogosian. "I had the experience of working in Congress and had ideas of things I would like to see done here. It was the acting of those ideas that drove me to get involved. My involvement in student leadership here at the University of Miami really contributed to my capabilities afterward."

Bogosian's career spans a range of private and public sector experience, with positions in the manufacturing and service industries, the United States Congress and two executive branch agencies. He currently serves as Senior Vice President for Certification at the Safran Group, an aerospace, defense and security company. Bogosian joined Safran Group in 2007 as President and CEO of Safran USA in Washington D.C. before moving to corporate headquarters in Paris in 2010.

Prior to joining Safran, Bogosian was appointed a Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Commerce, responsible for manufacturing industries, and served from 2001 to 2005. He then moved to the Federal Aviation Administration, as Assistant Administrator in charge of international policy and administrative services. During his government service, Bogosian was a member of the Senior Executive Service, and received the Gold Medal Award for Distinguished Achievement in the Federal Service.

He worked in the Congress on two occasions, as Legislative Assistant for U.S. Representative Jim Howard, Chairman of the Public Works and Transportation Committee, and as staff member on the Foreign Affairs Committee for Chairman Dante Fascell. Bogosian also worked for ten years in the field of government and public affairs, including advising city, university and foreign government clients, and helping to start up two businesses.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Georgetown University, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Miami School of Law. While at Miami Law, Bogosian served as the SBA President. He recently established the Student Leadership Award, which was given to the current SBA President, Christine Job, at the Annual Homecoming Breakfast.

"The school has been getting more and more diverse as to where we pull students from so that's a great sign," he said.
