Investor Rights Clinic Students Compete in Resolution Triathlon

Four Miami Law student interns with Miami Law's Investor Rights Clinic traveled to St. John's University School of Law in New York City earlier this month to compete in the Fifth Annual Securities Dispute Resolution Triathlon, the only competition to provide aspiring lawyers with an opportunity to build their advocacy skills in three critical forms of alternative dispute resolution: negotiation, mediation, and arbitration.

Over the course of two days, 18 teams from 15 law schools across the country competed in rounds judged by panels of three or four arbitrators and mediators from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. Miami Law's 3-member team was comprised of Brittany Brown, Kasha Leese and Shane Shannon; Max Schatzow participated as alternate and co-coach.

"The Securities Arbitration Competition provided us the opportunity to compete against adversaries and utilize the knowledge and skills we've developed in the Investor Rights Clinic," Shannon said afterwards.

"It was a fantastic event put on by St. John's School of Law," Schatzow added. "Personally, I learned a great deal about the importance of alternative dispute resolutions in the real world. I also learned many valuable skills that I will be taking with me into practice in the near future."

All four students are 3Ls who interned at the Investor Rights Clinic during its inaugural semester last spring, and returned to the clinic in the fall as Fellows. The four are handling real client matters at the clinic under the supervision of its Director, Teresa J. Verges.

The triathlon was an initiative of the Hugh L. Carey Center for Dispute Resolution, the St. John's Securities Arbitration Clinic, and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.
