Miami Law will kick off its Homecoming and Alumni Weekend activities on Thursday, Oct. 18, with the third Law Alumni Association Golf Tournament at the Melreese Country Club. Proceeds from this event will go toward establishing an endowed scholarship at the School of Law in memory of Paul T. Dee, JD '77, former Director of Hurricanes Athletics and an adjunct law professor.
On Friday, Oct. 19, Dean Patricia D. White will speak on "The Future of Legal Education and the Legal Profession" at 11 a.m. in Casa Bacardi, 1531 Brescia Avenue, on the Coral Gables campus.
Later that evening, Miami Law will host a mixer for both Miami and FSU law school alumni on the Bricks. During the mixer, Edward T. "Tad" Foote II, President Emeritus of the University of Miami, and Talbot "Sandy" D'Alemberte, President Emeritus of Florida State University, will be honored. Additionally, class reunion receptions will be held at the Lowe Art Museum for six classes: 1972, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997 and 2002.
On Saturday, Oct. 20, several Miami Law alumni will be honored at the Breakfast and Morning Spirits event, where the keynote speaker will be Larry Jones, JD '76, Chief Operating Officer of FOX Sports. Jones, responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation of the network's sports division, played an integral role in FOX's acquisition of the exclusive network broadcast rights to the National Football League, Major League Baseball, NASCAR, as well as other non-league programming such as the BCS Bowl Series and the Cotton Bowl. During his time at Miami Law, Jones was involved with the Honor Council. His daughter Molly is a 2008 graduate of the University of Miami.
Honorees at the breakfast will include William M. Hoeveler, former Senior Judge of the U.S. Federal Court of the Southern District, who will receive the Thomas Davison III Memorial Service Award. During his time on the bench, Judge Hoeveler gained a reputation as a champion of the Everglades and an opponent of Florida's sugar industry. He also presided over the trial of deposed Panamanian ruler Manuel Noriega and hearings in the Elian Gonzalez affair. Miami Law's Center for Ethics and Public Service named its lifetime achievement award after Judge Hoeveler.
Judge Stanford Blake, JD '73, of the 11th Judicial Circuit for Miami-Dade, will receive the Henry Latimer Leadership and Professionalism Award. Judge Blake is being recognized for exemplary leadership and for a career that is marked by scholarship, honesty, kindness and service.
The Joseph H. Bogosian Student Leadership Award will be given to third-year student Christine Job, president of the Student Bar Association.
The Homecoming football game will be held at Sun Life Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
