The publication named 24 legal educators and one legal education public policy advocate to its 2012 list of the most influential people in legal education. The magazine reported that it had received more than 85 nominations for the list, and that its editorial team had narrowed the list to 50. Then, the publication asked 350 people in legal education, including many law school deans, to rate each nominee based on how much he or she had influenced them in the preceding 12 months.

Jack Crittenden, editor-in-chief of the National Jurist, was quoted in an article on the magazine's website as saying that the list is a "who's who of the people who have shaped the discussion over the past year," which he described as a "challenging and pivotal year" in legal education. "While some have shaped discussion through traditional means, others have stirred the pot more," Crittenden said, adding that it was clear that "those who spoke up about legal education were heard."

Dean White became Miami Law's eleventh dean in 2009, after a decade as dean of the Arizona State University Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law. Dean White was cited by the legal writer Brian Leiter as one of the nine most transformative law deans in the first decade of this century, an accolade inspired in large part by her determination to adapt to the evolving legal landscape by making new ideas and technological innovations available to law students. At Miami Law, Dean White founded Legal Corps, a unique fellowship program that places Miami Law graduates in non-profit and public sector organizations nationwide, and tripled the number of clinics at the law school, vastly increasing the outreach work that students perform beyond the campus. A groundbreaking academic program, LawWithoutWalls, which draws on the talents of students and faculty from 18 academic institutions around the world, was founded at Miami Law under Dean White's guidance.
