Now, the two have established the Ronkin Family Scholarship to provide tuition assistance to Miami Law students who excel academically. The recipients will be known as Ronkin Scholars.
"My wife, Shari, and I both received academic scholarships that helped defray the cost of attending the law school," Joel Ronkin said. "We always have felt the desire and need to pay back that benefit so that others could also receive the same advantage. The time seemed right now to do so."
As the Executive Vice President and General Manager of Elizabeth Arden, Joel Ronkin is the head of the company's North America business. He is responsible for managing approximately 2,200 employees, as well as developing Elizabeth Arden's diverse portfolio. Before joining Arden more than 14 years ago, he was a commercial litigator with Steel Hector & Davis LLP in Miami.
Both Shari and Joel graduated from Miami Law with honors, and were members of the University of Miami Law Review and the Charles C. Papy, Jr. Moot Court Board. "My most vivid memories were from my first year of law school, as it was so different from the college learning environment," Joel Ronkin said. "The Socratic method of teaching at the school really created a dynamic, though sometimes stressful, learning environment. The incredible faculty taught me how to think and critically analyze a problem, a skill that I rely on in my career today."
Shari and Joel have three children and live in the Broward County community of Weston.
"We hope that the scholarship will allow and encourage talented, passionate law students, who might otherwise attend a different law school, to attend the University of Miami School of Law," Joel Ronkin said. "In addition, if nothing else, we hope that it helps lessen the financial burden of attending law school."
