Human Rights Conference at Duke to Honor University of Miami Professor James Nickel

Duke University will hold an interdisciplinary conference this week in honor of University of Miami Professor James W. Nickel's scholarly work in human rights law and theory. Professor Nickel, who teaches Philosophy and Law, is the author of the classic book "Making Sense of Human Rights" (1st ed. 1986, 2nd ed. 2007) and dozens of articles.

The event, "Theorizing Human Rights: A Conference in Honor of James Nickel," will be held on March 22 and 23 on Duke's campus in Durham, N.C. The main papers will be presented by Professor Charles R. Beitz, who teaches Politics at Princeton University; Professor Allen E. Buchanan, Philosophy and Law, Duke; Professor Thomas Christiano, Philosophy and Law, University of Arizona; Professor John Tasioulas, Law, University College London; Professor Leif Wenar, Law and Ethics, King's College London; and Professor Nickel.

A distinguished group of commentators and moderators from the United States, Europe and Canada will also participate. Topics include human rights in morality and law; human rights and democracy; global justice and the resource curse; using linkage arguments to defend human rights; and human rights and dignity.

"For more than 30 years, James Nickel has provided a clear voice on human rights and mentored students in human rights law and theory, jurisprudence, and political philosophy," said Professor Buchanan, who is organizing the conference. "The Keenan Ethics Center at Duke is pleased to be hosting a conference in honor of his distinguished career and work."
