After attending the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania at the height of the Vietnam War, an experience he says was "unique, to say the least," he enrolled at the University of Miami School of Law in the fall of 1973.
"I found a welcoming faculty that encouraged study and inspired thought," Berger said. "I fell in love with the entire learning process, my fellow students and, believe it or not, the facilities. I matured and took my studies seriously. I learned not only about the law but also about problem solving and negotiation."
Berger and his wife, Dr. Laurie Loevner, a professor of radiology at the University of Pennsylvania, have established a scholarship fund at Miami Law. The Berger/Loevner Family Endowed Scholarship Fund will provide financial assistance to deserving law students, and the recipients will be known as Berger/Loevner Scholars.
During his time as a student at Miami Law, Berger interned with the Public Defender's Office, Bankruptcy Court and a Miami law firm that he says "helped develop business skills I would put into practice later in my career."
After practicing real estate law for several years, Berger and his Miami Law classmate Jon Goodman, J.D. '76, co-founded a company that acquires multifamily garden apartment properties. PRG Real Estate Management Inc. has grown to more than 14,000 apartments in eleven states.
"Going to Miami Law school was one of the best experiences of my life," Berger said. "It has left fond and lasting impressions on me and helped foster a long and successful career. We hope, by our contribution, to assist others in achieving the unique educational opportunity offered by the Law School."
