"We are delighted to be partnering with the School of Education and Human Development's program in Community and Social Change," said Sandra Abraham, Executive Liaison for Interdisciplinary Programs and Initiatives at the law school. "There is already synergy between our public interest initiatives and the Department of Educational and Psychological Studies, and this joint-degree program will both formalize and strengthen these ties."
The Community and Social Change Master's Program prepares students to lead community organizations by teaching them to understand and contribute to the processes of organizational development, community development, and social well-being in community settings. Graduates will become leaders, activists, advocates, organizers and program developers who foster social change.
Miami Law's Professor Anthony Alfieri, Director of the Center for Ethics and Public Service, is the faculty advisor to the new joint program, and Marni Lennon, Assistant Dean of Public Interest and Pro Bono, will provide guidance regarding externship opportunities for students.
Students in the program will spend the first year taking courses at the School of Law full-time, and then will begin taking courses in the School of Education in their second year. Participants will be required to complete a three-credit practicum that includes 120 hours in a placement supported with biweekly classes and a final project or paper.
This is the third new joint degree program established by Miami Law this year.
