Four distinguished panelists participated at the event including Miami Law Professor Frances Hill; Alan Lash, LL.M. ‘85, founding partner of the boutique litigation law firm, Lash & Goldberg LLP; Albert “Chip” Hutzler, Partner at HealthCare Appraisers; and Andrea Ferrari, Manager at HealthCare Appraisers.
Professor Hill began by providing an overview of the ACA, and afterwards Lash, Hutzler, and Ferrari discussed the impact that the ACA is having in their specific legal practices. The discussions ranged from the impact on the insurance market and how it will affect mergers and acquisitions, to the new ACA driven quality payment system and how it will affect Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs).
Although all four distinguished panelists spoke about different sectors within health law, they all agreed that health law is a burgeoning field, blossoming with opportunity for law students and new lawyers.
After the discussion, students, including Health Law interns from Miami Law's Health Rights Clinic were able to ask questions and engage in further conversations with the panelists. The event was a great learning experience for both the panelists and the students.
The next UMHLA event is set for January 28, 2014, and will be a panel discussion on the "Business of Health Law," presented by the Health Law team of McDermott, Will and Emery. Students, faculty, and staff can join the UMHLA on OrgSync and RSVP for the next event.
