The University of Miami Faculty Senate has selected Miami Law Professor Ricardo J. Bascuas the recipient of its 2014 Outstanding Teaching Award. The Faculty Senate established the award in 2002 to recognize a distinguished record of teaching by UM faculty members.
Professor Bascuas teaches in the areas of evidence, criminal procedure, and international criminal law. He founded and directs Miami Law’s Federal Appellate Clinic, which represents indigent defendants before the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
A graduate of the University of Miami and Yale Law School, Professor Bascuas served as Assistant Federal Public Defender in Miami, representing indigent defendants at both the trial and appellate levels. He began his legal career practicing civil and criminal law in Miami.
Each year, members of the full-time faculty are invited to nominate members of the faculty for the award. A committee consisting of the last five awardees, together with the provost and Faculty Senate chair, reviews the nominations. The committee then makes a recommendation to the Senate.
Professor Bascuas will receive the Outstanding Teaching Award in a ceremony on Wednesday, April 2. All faculty are invited to attend.
