Miami Law will be hosting the 4th Annual Louis Henkin Lecture on Human Rightsfeaturing Michael Posner, Professor of Business and Society at NYU’s Stern School of Business.
His lecture, "Examining Human Rights and Global Business – A New Frontier,” will examine the changing landscape of the global economy where large and powerful multinational companies are operating in relatively weak states. It will examine the role of these companies both in advancing economic development and poverty alleviation while at the same time tackling the human rights challenges they face relating to their core business operations.
Professor Posner is working to launch the first-ever center on business and human rights at a business school. Prior to joining NYU Stern, Posner served from 2009 to 2013 in the Obama Administration as Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor at the State Department. From 1978 to 2009, he led Human Rights First, a New York-based human rights advocacy organization.
Posner played a major role in shaping U.S. policy from inside and outside of government on issues ranging from refugee and asylum law and policy, national security and human rights, Internet freedom, and business and human rights. Throughout his career, he has been active in several leading organizations in the field of business and human rights, including the Fair Labor Association, the Global Network Initiative, and the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights.
The lecture will be held Monday, September 15th at 5:30 p.m. at the University of Miami School of Law, Room E352. The event is free and open to the public.
A reception will follow at the Alma Jennings Foundation Student Lounge.
The Louis Henkin Lecture Series on Human Rights was named in honor of the late Louis Henkin, a prominent law professor at Columbia University who was one of the founders of the academic study of human rights and who helped educate a whole generation of human rights lawyers, scholars, and activists.
